Defense of Doctoral Thesis at the IMM on migratory movements in Spain

Today, September 24, 2025, the defense of Sheila María Torres Torán’s Doctoral Thesis, entitled “Modeling migration in Spain: causes, magnitude, and consequences,” was held at the Seminar of the Institute of Multidisciplinary Mathematics (IMM).

The work, supervised by IMM researchers Lucas Jódar and Rafael Company, presents a detailed analysis of migratory movements in Spain in recent years, based on mathematical models that integrate different factors to study their causes, magnitude, and consequences.

The evaluation committee was composed of Dr. Mohamed Nemiche (Université Ibn Zohr), as Chair; Dr. Joan Carles Micó (Polytechnic University of Valencia), as Secretary; and Dr. Paloma Merello (University of Valencia), as Member. Following the presentation and defense, the panel awarded the thesis a grade of excellent, pending the decision of the secret ballot regarding the Cum Laude distinction and the nomination for the Extraordinary Thesis Prize.

At the end of the event, the newly minted PhD in Mathematics deposited a copy of her thesis in the IMM Library as part of the program to assist with the printing and binding of doctoral theses.
