Mathematics takes center stage at the UPV: “Geometry and Fashion” on Pi Day

The UPV has dressed up in its finest scientific attire today to commemorate International Mathematics Day. The highlight of the day was the inaugural lecture for the exhibition “Geometry and Fashion,” an event that demonstrated that equations and catwalks have much more in common than prejudice would have us believe.

The talk, held in the Screening Room of the Architecture School, was given by Mariló López, professor at the Polytechnic University of Madrid with extensive experience in mathematics outreach. The event was the result of close collaboration between the Department of Applied Mathematics, our IMM, and the University Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics.

During her presentation, Mariló López explained how the exhibition is the result of a collaborative and disruptive effort. The project has managed to combine the analytical rigor of mathematics students with the creative vision of professionals in the fashion industry.

After the talk, attendees were able to enjoy the official opening of the exhibition in the Architecture School Exhibition Hall. The exhibition is not just a display of garments, but an educational journey through the intrinsic beauty of numbers. The exhibition will remain open to the public until April 18, 2026.

This initiative reinforces the role of mathematics as a living discipline, capable of dialoguing with art and industry to offer aesthetic and functional solutions in our daily lives.
