A UPV mathematical study proposes imitating the Formula 1 competition system to increase the competitiveness of LaLiga

Imitate the Formula 1 competition system to make LaLiga more competitive. This is the conclusion of a mathematical study conducted by the researcher of the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) Francisco Pedroche. In his work, he concludes that both the Spanish LaLiga and the English Premier League are four times less competitive than Formula 1, “which has a direct influence on the interest of fans in both sports”.

In his study, Pedroche analyzed the competitiveness of the Formula 1 championship over the last ten years and, from there, studied what the impact would be of copying the competition system of the motor racing world championship.

“Introducing a new classification system in each LaLiga matchday would be simple and even compatible with the current system. Apart from increasing the fans’ interest in knowing the winner of each soccer matchday, public and private betting agencies would have a new ranking on which to draw up their pools and bets,” says Francisco Pedroche, a researcher at the UPV’s Institute of Multidisciplinary Mathematics (IMM) and author of the study, presented last July at the Mathematical Modelling in Engineering & Human Behaviour Conference (MME&HB2023).
